Online marketplaces have proven to be quite the cash cow. Brands are competing for your business, and that’s great news for you, the consumer. Two of the biggest to enter the squared circle are Thrive Market and Amazon. 

More people are likely to think of Amazon as a store than a rainforest. But what about Thrive Market? Can this scrappy newcomer even think of competing with a giant like Amazon? You might be surprised to learn who comes out on top.

Let’s look deeper into this rivalry to see what each brand offers. There’s a lot here for everyone, and a lot of it comes down what type of food/products you’re in need of. Let’s start with the underdog.

Thrive Market

Founded in 2014, Thrive (see our full Thrive Market review) is pretty new to the game. But where they deserve praise is in their ability to start out small and turn into the heavyweight they are today. They took the proverbial ball and ran with it. And since doing so, they haven’t once stopped to look back.

Thrive Market isn’t all that different from other online vendors. They require that you pay a membership fee upon signup, and they offer their members high-dollar savings on foods and household goods.

The other big plus here is that Thrive Market guarantees savings. So much so that if you haven’t earned back your membership fee by year’s end, Thrive will put the difference on your account when you renew for another year.

On average, you can expect to save anywhere from 25 to 50 percent compared to what you’d pay in a big box store. Make no mistake, that’s a substantial chunk of change, and one worth signing up for.

And then there’s the product selection. Thrive Market currently offers over 500 unique brands that are spread across more than 6,000 items. That, too, is a lot of inventory of which most consumers will never even scratch the surface.

More folks are preferring to shop from the confines of their home. Thrive Market makes this easy, as they offer far more than healthy foods. From toilet paper to supplements, you’ll rarely need to make a store run again.

Orders ship quickly, and Thrive uses environmentally sound methods to do this. Every part of their packaging is 100 percent recyclable.

Oh, and if that alone wasn’t impressive enough, their warehouses produce no waste. If you’re looking for a brand that is conscious about protecting the planet, Thrive Market is right up your alley.

Thrive Market’s foods are non-GMO and organic, with plenty of dietary meals available to suit your needs. It’s a flexible brand that makes it easy for you to order from. Eating healthy foods can be costly, but Thrive makes the membership worth your while.

Which brings us to fees. To become a Thrive Market member, you’re looking at a yearly charge of $59.95. That equals out to $5 a month. Conversely, you may try their services on a monthly basis.

This will run you double what you’d pay as a member, coming out to $9.95 a month. But when you’re saving up to 50 percent on certain items, $5 to $10 a month sounds more than reasonable.

You also get free shipping on all orders equaling $49 or more. Even your first order with Thrive Market gets additional love. You need only spend a total of $25 your first time around to get free shipping.

You can even set up scheduled ordering to ensure that your household never runs out of food or other items.

Amazon

With a 20-year head start over Thrive Market, Amazon has had a lot longer to build its legacy. Most people are familiar with Amazon, but let’s cover the basics anyway. You can set up a free membership by simply creating a username and password.

They offer millions of items that are purchased with ease. You can also sign up to become a Prime member, in which you’ll see free, expedited shipping on your (eligible) purchases. 

You can also stream movies and read online as much as you want. If you thought Thrive Market’s $60 yearly fee was bad, try doubling that to become a Prime member.

That’s right, you’re looking at $119 every year. Alternatively, you may pay monthly, just as you would with Thrive. This will run you $12.99 a month.

I compared several products from each marketplace, and more often than not, Thrive Market handily beat Amazon by DOLLARS. From food to toothpaste, I saved an average of $5 an item. That’s nothing to sneeze at.

Some items netted me savings of $20 or more. You just can’t replicate these kinds of savings from big box stores. Now, with all that being said, Amazon can’t be touched when it comes to variety.

Amazon currently carries more than 300 million products. Compared to Thrive Market’s modest 6,000, it’s nowhere near a fair fight. Plus, they’ve had a lot longer to amass their staggering amount of goods and services.

But that’s just inventory, and let’s face it, you’re never going to buy anywhere near that anyway. You likely stick to a routine set of products like everyone else, occasionally breaking from the norm to try something new.

Both brands offer more than enough for everyone to live comfortably in that regard. Yes, there are more items to look at and choose from with Amazon. But if you want to save money over a smaller selection of products, Thrive Market is the place to do it.

Thrive Market currently can’t touch Amazon on products like clothing, shoes, electronics, etc. But we’re focused more so on the food side of things. And as it stands, Thrive Market simply has the better savings between the two.

Bottom Line

If you’re interested in eating right and getting substantially-sourced foods, Thrive Market gets the edge. Both are obviously in it to make money, but Thrive Market seems to do more for the planet than Amazon. And considering Amazon’s name, there’s more than a little irony there.

By focusing on these select few, you can look forward to getting exceptional customer service and delivery. This goes a long way in giving customers reliable service they can count on. And when you need your items in a timely manner, this is one of the most important aspects of food delivery.

Costco is a respected name among retailers, and for good reason. They offer a huge selection of goods at incredible prices. But Thrive Market is no lightweight, either. Their prices regularly beat out the competition, so who is the better of the two?

Let’s dig a little deeper to see what kind of value they have and how you can benefit from them. Depending on what items you’re looking for, one may be better than the other. Read on to learn which company is better-suited to your needs.

Costco

Let’s begin with the most widely-known. Costco is a retail giant that carries a dizzying amount of products. They offer nice savings on everyday foods and household wares, while providing same-day delivery in many cases.

But to get your foot in the door, you first have to pay a membership fee. There are two tiers available: Gold Star and Gold Star Executive. The difference? Gold Star will run you $60 a year and give you access to Costco’s products and services.

Gold Star Executive, on the other hand, is double that amount, setting you back $120 a year. This membership comes with some nice perks not found in the former.

You can earn savings on select items and even earn travel points. It’s certainly geared toward a certain niche, but the savings are there.

Both memberships grant you access to Costco’s nearly 800-store reach, as well as all Costco fueling stations. The biggest benefit here, though, is the ability to get food delivered the same or next day.

Costco delivers anything from milk to produce, a service you can’t get with Thrive Market. Where the latter avoids perishables, Costco, for lack of a better word, thrives on them.

Costco also offers other bonuses not found with many online marketplaces. College students, for example, get a gift card and Google Nest device. Military vets and members get coupons and other freebies for signing up.

While all that sounds good – and it is – Costco takes a mighty big hit when it comes to paying for products. You see, they only accept Visa credit cards. As you can imagine, this causes some problems for cardholders who aren’t Visa carriers.

You can get around this by signing up for a Costco Anywhere Visa Card, but not everyone wants to do that. If you’re shopping at their stores, you can bring cash, but online? Customers are limited in how they can pay.

Costco clearly has a much bigger selection of the types of foods you can have delivered to your door. And many times, that delivery is PDQ. But if you have to jump through hoops just to pay for your groceries, is it worth the hassle?

Thrive Market

With Thrive Market, your hands aren’t tied like they are when shopping at Costco. You simply sign up for a membership and you’re free to buy whatever they offer.

Thrive Market focuses on non-GMO, organic, and many vegan-friendly foods. If you’re on a specific diet that limits what you can eat, you can rest assured that Thrive Market will accommodate your needs.

In order to gain access to their substantially-sourced foods and products, you’ll first need to pay a membership fee. This is paid yearly to the sum of $59.95. This equals out to $5 a month.

If you don’t think you’ll need to shop with them every month, you can choose a membership that you pay only on the months you need them.

This membership is twice as costly as the yearly one, running you $9.95 each month that you shop with Thrive Market. While this may sound like a lot, you’re likely to see that money back in savings.

On average, a Thrive Market member saves anywhere from 25 to 50 percent on items that you’d normally buy from large retail giants. Again, this is made possible thanks to Thrive Market focusing on a select few brands, while offering their own extensive line of products.

And let me tell you, Thrive Market’s private label goods are most excellent. From their supplements to their sauces, it’s hard to beat the quality you’re getting.

Another nice perk of being a member is that you are guaranteed to get your membership fee back one way or another. If you’ve not earned it back in savings by the end of your yearly membership, Thrive Market will apply the difference to your account upon renewal.

I’m also a big fan of Thrive Market’s business practices. Their warehouses are environmentally sound, producing zero waste. Even their packaging and shipping is planet-friendly. You can recycle 100 percent of their boxes and containers, causing less impact globally.

While Thrive Market doesn’t have the wide selection of products that Costco has, there’s still plenty to stock your shelves with. They currently carry over 500 brands, totaling more than 6,000 unique products.

Many of the products I compared between Thrive Market and Costco saw the former coming out on top. It’s kind of hard to break down, as Costco deals more in bulk. But from my findings, Thrive Market’s savings are hard to beat.

Bottom Line

Both Costco and Thrive Market offer excellent products. If you have to have fresh produce or dairy delivered to your door, Costco gets the win here. Just be prepared to adhere to their strict Visa-only purchasing arrangement. If you’re more in need of dried goods and foods, Thrive Market does it better, and they’ll save you a good chunk of change in the process.

They’re relatively new to the game, but they came out of the gate swinging. Their vast selection of non-GMO food is impressive, to say the least. This membership-based company nets their customers incredible savings, making it worth the investment.

But there’s another online grocer that offers a more intimate shopping experience. One that may not have the name recognition they really deserve. That company is Peapod.

They work a bit differently than Thrive Market, but are they better? Let’s look at each brand to see which one best fits your needs.

Thrive Market

Thrive Market is actually the newcomer here. They began operations in 2014 and haven’t let up since. Thrive Market is a membership-based company that has proven to save their customers a handsome sum on money.

By focusing on healthy foods, Thrive has cornered a good portion of the food-delivery market. Their selection of foods offered are ensured to be free of GMOs, making them the go-to choice for many dieting consumers.

Those with special dietary needs know they’re getting safe and healthy products when they order from Thrive Market. And doing so couldn’t be easier.

To shop with Thrive Market, one needs only to become a member. This costs you $59.95 a year, or $5 a month. You may also opt to shop with them on an as-needed basis. You do this by electing to pay $9.95 a month.

Regardless of whether you’re a yearly or monthly member, all Thrive Market customers can look forward to significant savings. Depending on what you’re ordering, the average savings per item compared to large retail chains is between 25 and 50 percent.

One of the features I love about Thrive Market is that they operate like they truly care about people and the environment. For example, for every new membership with Thrive, they will match that by giving a free membership to a family who has fallen on hard times.

Could you imagine being one of those families? Picture going from everyday big box grocery shopping to suddenly saving up to 50 percent on your items. You’d have a much better chance of stocking your fridge, that’s for sure.

Another commendable endeavor is their packaging and shipping. All of Thrive Market’s delivery items are 100 percent recyclable. That’s great for the environment.

And then there’s Thrive’s warehouses, where zero waste is produced. If you’re all about saving the planet, Thrive Market is worthy of your support.

They currently have more than 500 brands to choose from. This equals out to over 6,000 foods and products. It’s a respectable selection that continues to grow. They offer health and fitness supplements, herbs, natural remedies, and more.

What’s great is that you can schedule certain items to be automatically delivered to your home. This ensures that you never run out of the things you use the most.

With the savings on deck, Thrive Market is a great company to use for bulk buying. Orders totaling $49 or more are delivered free of charge. This makes it easy to stock up without breaking the bank.

Peapod

You might be surprised to learn this (I know I was), but Peapod has been around since 1989. Their modus operandi differs somewhat from traditional online marketplaces. You see, Peapod is essentially a food delivery service for specific stores.

You place your orders from grocers that are within Peapod’s own chain, and a Peapod delivery truck brings them to your door. This is kind of where Peapod falls apart, but more on that in a moment.

Peapod is owned by the same company that owns Food Lion grocery stores, as well as Giant-Landover and Stop & Shop. So you’re limited in the brands and products that you can buy.

If you don’t mind the brands offered from the aforementioned stores, however, this isn’t an issue. The great thing about Peapod is that they have employees who are trained to choose only the best (read: freshest) foods to be delivered to you.

This allows for a more personalized shopping experience. You can look forward to getting high-quality products right to your front door. And when it comes to pricing, you get the same savings offered from the above stores.

There’s no membership fee, either, which will certainly appeal to those who shop both frequently and intermittently. That being said, you can expect to pay a delivery charge of anywhere from $7 to $10 per order.

Now, here’s where the rub comes in. Peapod doesn’t have the reach that Thrive Market does. Peapod is only available in certain areas, greatly limiting their customer base.

On top of that, their delivery service is typically pretty underwhelming. Many times, orders are incomplete and aren’t packaged as well as Thrive Market’s. There are often complaints of missed windows, with customers waiting far beyond the expected delivery time.

The concept is great; it’s the execution that fails. This results in customers having to make trips to their local stores to get the items that weren’t delivered. This negates the need for which Peapod is supposed to accommodate.

And then there’s pricing. Thrive Market won time and again when comparing savings between the two. Their selection of non-GMO, organic, and dietary meals trumps Peapod’s by leaps and bounds.

Bottom Line

As commendable as Peapod’s food delivery service is, there simply isn’t a comparison when it comes to Thrive Market’s customer service and savings. Peapod may be the veteran of the two brands, but Thrive Market executes every aspect of direct-to-door food delivery better. You’re getting a greater selection of healthy foods. Yes, there’s a membership fee involved. But you generally see that back in savings in no time flat. And, you can rely on Thrive Market to have your order delivered in a timely fashion.

One might have prices or services that the other doesn’t, and vice-versa. There’s a lot to like about both, so let’s dig right in to see which brand offers the best shopping experience.

Trader Joe’s

Trader Joe’s is a popular grocer that offers items at rock-bottom prices. If there’s one in your area, there’s probably a long line of people waiting to get in as we speak. People will endure a lot to save a few bucks. Ah, yes, the almighty dollar.

The reasoning for this is quite simple, really. Good foods, cheap prices, NO delivery options. This is where Trader Joe’s loses out to their online competitors.

Admittedly, online delivery service is a huge undertaking. There’s a lot that goes into it, and for Trader Joe’s to continue selling products at low prices, they can’t afford to start delivering.

If they did, it would likely crush their entire business model. You see, Trader Joe’s prides themselves on hiring people to work in their stores. Sure, having a delivery service would open more slots for employment.

But the cost would be too high. A cost that would actually negatively impact its existing in-store employees. Not to mention the savings their customers are currently enjoying.

And this is where Trader Joe’s gets a big thumbs up. You’re getting a vast quantity of health foods for prices you can’t find anywhere else. If you’re on a strict diet or have dietary restrictions, Trader Joe’s is a safe place to shop.

From vegan-friendly to keto, you’ll have no trouble eating high-quality foods on the cheap that accommodate your needs. The downside to these items is that they aren’t substantially-sourced like you find with Thrive Market.

A lot of people do business with Thrive Market for this very reason. They’re pretty serious about where their foods come from. Trader Joe’s, not so much.

But again, this allows them to keep their prices low. So it gets down to the individual. Do you want to support farmers or your wallet?

For better or worse, that’s the arguing point when comparing these two brands. In the price department, Trader Joe’s can’t be touched. The money you’ll save shopping with them is on par with shopping at Aldi (and wouldn’t you know, they’re owned by the same company).

You can also find all of your produce and dairy needs at Trader Joe’s – neither of which is offered by Thrive Market.

Another huge plus with Trader Joe’s is that there’s no membership fee. Anyone can shop with them at any time. The flip side of this is that you might have to wait in line.

Thrive Market

Thrive Market, on the other hand, does indeed require you to be a member to shop with them. This is more than just a simple sign-up, however. You’ll have to pay either a monthly or yearly fee to gain access to their long line of health foods and products.

For those who wish to shop only a few times or so a year, Thrive Market charges $9.95 on the months you use. Not bad considering the savings you stand to net. But more on those in a moment.

If you’re serious about stocking your home with quality products and prefer not stepping foot in a store, a yearly membership is more sensible. This will set you back $59.95 (equals out to $5 a month).

Both yearly and monthly members benefit from free shipping on orders that are $49 and higher. And for your very first purchase, your order needs to total just $25. Not a bad gig, and a perfect time to stock up your fridge and cabinets.

To do that, you get to choose from over 6,000 items. Compare that to the 4,000 that Trader Joe’s stocks. Thrive Market carries more than 500 unique brands, including their own private label.

One of the biggest benefits of signing up with Thrive Market is their savings. You can expect to pay an average of 25 to 50 percent less than what you’d pay at most retail stores. Trader Joe’s is the exception here, however.

Even with Thrive Market’s discount prices, they don’t quite compare to Trader Joe’s. And as we already discussed, you can’t buy dairy or produce from Thrive Market.

Now, with all that being said, food delivery is key to Thrive Market’s success. And that’s simply something you can’t get with Trader Joe’s.

Thrive Market ships your order to you quickly and efficiently. They pack their products in ways that prevent melting, prolonging the life and quality of your orders.

On top of that, all of their packaging is 100 percent recyclable. It’s a great way to do your part in repurposing resources. Thrive Market shines when it comes to being environmentally-friendly. Even their warehouses operate on a zero-waste scale.

As you can see, there’s certainly a trade-off when shopping with either brand. Trader Joe’s is cheaper, offers produce, and doesn’t require a membership. But you can’t have your food delivered.

Thrive Market does require a membership fee and is limited on some of the foods they carry. But there’s a greater amount of products available, and it’s all delivered right to your door.

Bottom Line

If you don’t mind physically shopping for your food, Trader Joe’s is a great way to save money on healthy products. You can do all of your shopping under one roof, with the caveat that you may have to wait in line.

Thrive Market is perfect for the person who insists on supporting farmers and prefers not making a trip to the store. The savings, while not as great as Trader Joe’s, are still very good. And you’ll have access to supplements and other items not found at Trader Joe’s.

If there are two brands that are very similar to one another, it’s Thrive Market (see our full Thrive Market review) and Whole Foods. Many online vendors can’t compete with Thrive Market’s savings. But Whole Foods gives them a serious run for their money.

How much of a run? For that, we need to look into each brand’s practices and what they offer their customers. Depending on your needs, you may find one is better than the other. The following information will help you determine which brand is right for you.

Whole Foods

Whole Foods carries a vast assortment of healthy foods. It is their mission to provide nothing short of high-quality, fat-free food items at reasonable prices. In my research, I found Whole Foods to offer incredible savings on everyday staples.

With 500 stores in the United States alone, Whole Foods is quickly shaping up to be one of the most trusted grocers of health foods. Their selection of organic products is highly respected, so much so that they average $20 billion annually.

That’s nothing to sneeze at, and is rather telling of the impact they have on shoppers of health foods. In 2017, Amazon bought Whole Foods to the tune of $13.7 billion. That alliance has seen Whole Foods increase sales significantly.

Like Thrive Market, Whole Foods sells their own private label. These, along with other brands, can be delivered directly to your door.

So, how do you join this conglomerate? Well, this is where Amazon comes into play. You must first be an Amazon Prime member to shop at Whole Foods. For that, you’re looking at a yearly fee of $119.

Once you’re Primed and ready, you can use either Amazon or the mobile app to add items to your virtual cart. From there, simply schedule a delivery window and your food will be sent out in a timely manner.

Like everything with Amazon, Whole Foods is a well-oiled machine that rarely fails to provide quick and easy services. It works wonderfully and is very user-friendly.

The downside here is the Prime membership requirement. Maybe you don’t want to be one. Maybe you don’t shop on Amazon. If that’s the case, $119 is a bit steep to order health foods.

The plus here is that Whole Foods also has brick-and-mortar stores. In certain areas, you can elect to pick up your items directly from the store. The flip side of this is that you may have to wait for windows to become available for both pickup and delivery due to heavy traffic.

You typically don’t see this with Thrive Market. Very seldom do they run into problems that push out the normal delivery of orders.

Thrive Market

When comparing prices between Whole Foods and Thrive Market, I found Thrive to have better savings. On average, I saved a dollar or two on items. And when you factor in Thrive Market’s free delivery on items totaling $49 or more, it’s hard to beat their offerings.

As where Whole Foods requires a yearly (Prime) membership of $119, Thrive Market charges half of that. For $59.95 a year, you gain access to Thrive Market’s 6,000+ foods and household products.

This includes their own private label, as well as over 500 other brands. Thrive Market has a huge selection of herbs, spices, fitness supplements, and organic remedies. It’s an impressive amount of items that include natural cleaners and even toilet paper.

Most of what you need in your house can be purchased from Thrive Market. The only drawback is that they don’t stock fresh produce or dairy. So if you need those, it’s going to cost you a trip to your local grocer.

Alternatively, you can always order those items from Whole Foods. But this is only a reasonable option if you’re an existing Amazon Prime member.

While the need for an additional trip might sound counterproductive, one has to factor in Thrive Market’s average savings.

A vast majority of items sold are 25 to 50 percent cheaper than what you’d pay at large retail stores. If you’re only using said stores to buy fruits, vegetables, and dairy, it’s a small caveat to deal with.

Thrive Market also promises that you’ll get your membership fee back in savings. And if you’re buying food and other items that regularly net you big savings, it’s easy to see how quickly that can become a reality.

One must also consider everything that Thrive Market does for people and communities. You see, when you sign up for a new membership, Thrive Market matches that by giving away a free yearly membership.

These go to families that are in need; perhaps one that has recently lost their main source of income due to the pandemic. Suddenly being able to save money on food and household items is a blessing that Thrive Market deserves more recognition for.

They also have a very low impact on the environment. All of their packages shipped to customers are completely recyclable. And all of their warehouses are designed to produce zero waste.

I also appreciate that Thrive Market gives their customers the option to shop with them on an as-needed basis. The membership fee is slightly more on the per-month cost, at $9.95 a month.

But when you’re buying things that are exponentially cheaper than retail stores, $10 a month is reasonable. There’s a good chance you’ll see that fee come right back to your wallet.

There were select items I compared that saw a difference of $15 in Thrive Market’s favor. Yes, it depends on what you’re buying. But by and large, you’re going to benefit from Thrive Market’s services.

Bottom Line

It’s a close call, and a lot of it depends on whether you’re already an Amazon Prime member. But for the most part, Thrive Market makes the most sense in terms of savings. Whole Foods has a lot more to choose from, including perishables. But if those aren’t important to you, you’re better off saving money on Thrive Market’s cheaper membership.

Why Your Kids Shouldn’t Drink Soda

To be blunt, drinking soda is one of the worst things you can do for your health. Consuming soda on a regular basis is strongly linked to obesity, poor heart health, and reduced lifespan.

Eliminating soda from your diet is one of the easiest and most effective ways to become healthier and improve your lifestyle. And for your kids, cutting out soda can be a big step in protecting their health, helping them stay at a healthy weight, and reducing their likelihood of certain health problems in the future.

One big reason soda is so harmful is that it is loaded with sugar. The average soda contains a whopping 7-10 teaspoons of sugar.

The average American adult consumes about 17 teaspoons of added sugar per day. (Added sugar refers to sugar that doesn’t occur naturally in foods.) Most of the added sugar people consume comes from sugary drinks, like soda.
