Villa Canales is a municipality in the Guatemala department of Guatemala. The municipality covers an area of 38.8 square kilometres (15.0 sq mi) and has a population of 34,409 (2018 census). It is bordered to the north by Mixco, to the east by Guatemala City, to the southwest by Santa Catarina Pinula, and to the northwest by San Miguel Petapa.
The area of Villa Canales was originally settled by the Maya people. The municipality was created on 26 June 1876 by president Miguel García Granados. It is named after one of the early residents of the area, Mariano Canales.
Villa Canales is home to the Francisco Marroquín University, the largest private university in Guatemala. The university was founded in 1971 and has an enrolment of over 10,000 students.
The municipality is home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Parque Centroamerica, a large park which is home to a lake, a playground, and a number of restaurants. Villa Canales is also home to the Museo Nacional de los Ferrocarriles de Guatemala, a museum dedicated to the history of the country’s railway system.
