Steffisburg is a municipality in the Thun administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. Located in the Emmental (hill country), Steffisburg includes the village of Eriz and the exclave of Schrattenfluh. The earliest traces of a settlement in the Steffisburg area are from the Neolithic period. Numerous Bronze Age artifacts have been found, though little is known about the people who lived in the area during that era. During the Roman era a small settled farm or estate known as villa Turicum existed in the area. In476, the Burgundians settled in the west and conquered much of Switzerland. The villa Turicum was given to them and became known as Villa Magna Burgundiana. In 534, the Franks conquered the Burgundians and Steffisburg became part of the Frankish Empire. In the 8th-10th centuries, there was significant unrest in Steffisburg.
