Dalian is a major city and seaport in the south of Liaoning Province in Northeast China. It is the southernmost city of the Liaodong Peninsula. Dalian is the province’s second largest city and has sub-provincial administrative status; only the provincial capital (Shenyang) is larger. The Shandong Peninsula lies southwest across the Bohai Strait; Korea lies across the Yellow Sea to the southeast.

Dalian originally served as a fishing village and naval outpost. It was opened as a treaty port in 1858, and became an important center of foreign trade in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The city’s status changed with the lease of the Kwantung peninsula from Russia in 1898, when it became the principal naval base of the Imperial Japanese Navy. After Russia’s defeat in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), Port Arthur became a major base for the Japanese. In 1924, it was renamed Dalian, and became an important economic center for the Japanese.

As the economic base of Japan’s Kwantung Leased Territory and a major international port, Dalian was heavily damaged during the Russo-German War (1941-1945). It was occupied by the Soviet Union in the last months of the war, and eventually returned to Chinese control in 1946. Since 1949, Dalian has been controlled by the Communist Party of China.
