Currais Novos is a municipality located in the Rio Grande do Norte state of Brazil. According to the IBGE 2010 census, the population is 48,632 and the area is 320.62 square kilometers. The city is located in the southern part of the state, about 150 kilometers from the state capital, Natal.
The municipality was originally settled by the Portuguese in the early 18th century and later turned over to the Dutch. It was eventually annexed by Brazil in 1763. The name “Currais Novos” means “new pens” or “new corrals” in Portuguese.
The municipality contains the 17th century Our Lady of Conception church, as well as a number of other historical landmarks. The city is also home to a number of kid-friendly attractions, including the Natal Zoo, the Parque das Dunas, and the Potiguar de Cava de Equimoses archaeological site.
