Using CBD to help manage your own wellbeing is now easier than ever thanks to the wide range of products available on the modern market. But when it comes to helping your stressed, sore or infirm pets, CBD is increasingly seen to be a legitimate solution to a catalogue of physical and behavioural issues for your animals.
So, can CBD products be used with your pets and what are the potential benefits?
Thanks to CBD’s rise in popularity in the modern market , a wealth of research papers have been launched with institutions such as Harvard University launching studies that have investigated word-of-mouth reports that CBD can help manage physical pain, anxiety, and more when used as a compliment to conventional healthcare.
But can it work with animals?
A broad sweep of surveys says…yes!
While research is ongoing, respected papers like the Washington Post have conducted deep-dives on the effectiveness of CBD for animals, highlighting that “people are turning to CBD to help manage pain, arthritis, seizures and other health problems in their pets”. Further research has also shown that the compounds in CBD can be broadly safe if used with care, citing that: “Based on recent advances in cannabinoid administration in humans, controlled CBD may be safe in humans and animals“ and that infused products or oils can result in a “significant decrease in pain and increase in activity”, when administered. Despite these positive observations, it is important to remember that these are single studies and research is ongoing. We would always say that it is essential to consult with your vet before administering any course of treatment, and any responsible pet owner should make themselves aware of the facts before embarking on any course of treatment.
What should I check before administering CBD
What are you giving your pet CBD for: Take the time to ask – why does your pet need CBD? If they are barking or anxious, can you provide desensitisation training or remove stressful elements from their life? Always take the time to ask if the issue is a problem that can be solved without introducing a new treatment to their diet.
Type of Animal: If you are giving CBD to a large or small animal, check to see what available breed guidelines say about your pet. Particular care should be given to avoid administering CBD items to cats as they are highly sensitive to THC and can react adversely if not given their treatment correctly.
How is affecting my animal: If you do choose to administer CBD to your pet, always check on their behavior and look for any adverse reactions. Do not give your pet any CBD products without good reason or simply allow it to mindlessly become a part of your daily routine. If you see no change, work with your vet to agree a treatment regimen and if your pet is reacting aversely, scale back or eliminate their dosage entirely.
If you are at all in doubt about your pet’s welfare, always consult a professional and apply their advice as directed. If you want to learn more, check out this CBD Pet Guide to find out what you need to help make sure that your pet’s needs are safely met.
