tips for new bloggers

Starting a blog can be fun, connect you to other bloggers, allow you to express yourself on your own site and on your own terms and can even generate money. There are plenty of websites out there that have great information on how to blog. Go check out Blogging Basics 101, HubSpot, ProBlogger and others for advice from the experts.

Just from my own experience, I wanted to share some things I encountered.

  1. Be yourself. Don’t try to fit into a mold of how “bloggers should be”. Talk about what you want to talk about. Be real, be you.
  2. Pick the domain, the name and the design to optimize your content. There are plenty of sites that are free to join, and if you don’t think you will use it much or you are unsure, that may be the way to start. Fees are not very much, as a rule, so maybe start the free one, you can upgrade later as you progress.
  3. Make friends: find some blogging communities that are filled with people in your niche. You will soon find all kinds of like minded bloggers and you can read their stories, share their sites and connect in your similarities. Most of these communities have a other social media presence,so you can stay in touch in several ways. Read other blogs and leave comments. Many bloggers end their posts with some questions, just hop in and answer.
  4. Comment back when people leave comments on your blog. You can create relationships with your online community by both answering the comments left on your blog and also visiting the commentor’s blog and leaving a comment. I can’t tell you how happy it makes me when I comment on a new blog and then see that blogger come visit back and leave a comment. I’m likely to go back and visit their blog.
  5. Don’t apologize for talking too much or too little. If you haven’t blogged in two weeks, that’s fine. If you write 1000 words a day that’s fine too. Back to #1 – be you. Blog when you have something to say. When you don’t have anything you feel like talking about, just spend your time visiting other blogs and making new friends. Following others will get them to follow you and reading someone’s blog may inspire you to write in yours today.

I hope these tips are helpful to you new bloggers out there and maybe experienced bloggers learned something too. Do you have any helpful advice to add to the list? Please comment below.
