Workouts these days

I’m still getting up early these days to fit in my workouts before heading to work. For some reason, getting up at 5AM instead of 4:30AM is entirely manageable. My workouts are also shorter than the 50ish minute bootcamp I was doing. I still go to sleep most nights at 10PM, but I’m not a zombie at 8:00 every night.
How do I get up at 5:00 every day?
First thing that makes it somewhat easier is that my husband also gets up at 5AM. He hops right in the shower and I drag my butt to the coffee maker.
I usually have a couple of crackers and about 1/2 a cup of coffee. After my workout, I reheat the 2nd half of the cup and have a slice of turkey and then get in the shower myself. I know that’s super random, but I don’t usually get back to the kitchen to eat breakfast until about 7 and I feel like I need something. So, a slice of turkey gives me a few grams of protein for a small amount of calories and tides me over until my oatmeal. And, my workouts really aren’t long enough or intense enough to warrant a ‘pre workout’ fueling of toast and almond butter or protein pancake.
I also love that my morning, at home workouts can easily be done in my sports bra and shorts – so. much. less. laundry. Total win!
While I’m waiting another week and a half for Best Body Bootcamp to start, here’s how I’m keeping active:
Most mornings, my workout starts with a warm up on the bike. The first 5 minutes are very slow. If I’m going to do a strength workout, then I try to do another 5 minutes of sprints on the bike and then move on to weights.
I have a new favorite workout app:
I can customize my routines – focus on upper body, lower body, abs or any combination of them. (I have no affiliation with the people that make the Daily Workout aps, I just like it) This is the paid version. There is a free version, too. I also started using ankle weights when I do the leg exercises. That little extra bit is awesome.
I also have Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred. If I do that, I don’t do the bike warm up.
Yesterday morning, I rode the bike for 25 minutes. The first 5 minutes were slow and then I upped my speed for 5 minutes at a time with the 3rd speed increase being almost a full out sprint. Then, I cooled down for 5 minutes. That was a good one.
My morning workout is usually 25-40 minutes. I think that’s a perfect amount of time. I never do the exact same thing two days in a row, and while the bike is kind of boring, as soon as I start ramping up my speed, I don’t have a chance to be bored.
Saturdays have become my rest day and Sundays have been a longer mileage day. Two weeks ago, I went for a long bike ride and this past weekend I went for a long walk with my running buddy and hopefully we’ll go out again this Sunday.
Today is National Running Day. I haven’t really received real clearance to run, but I’m thinking I’m going anyway. It’ll be more of a run/walk, mostly walk, but I just can’t resist. Although it’s going to have to wait until this evening.
