Workout Buddies

This weekend was one of workout buddies. First, my gym buddy and I finally connected for a Saturday morning workout. It’s been way too long.
We hit the gym at 7:30AM and it was great how time flew by. I even did a good job of getting in some leg weight exercises. My hamstrings especially got a good workout.
Then, yesterday I actually had a running buddy! YAY! My friend has run a few 5K’s but never really trained for anything. She and I have been talking a lot about longer races. She’s decided she wants to do a half marathon and so we picked the Huntington Beach Half Marathon on Super Bowl Sunday! I’m really excited to have a friend to run with.
She’s still at the beginning distances of her training. So, we figured out that her house is exactly 1 mile from mine, so I can run to her, do a few miles together and then continue on to whatever distance I want to do.
So, we did 2 miles together yesterday. We’re doing the Gallaway run/walk. She’s got the best neighborhood perfect 1 mile loop. Her 8th grader actually came with us for the first loop and then ditched us, so we finished without her.
After we finished, I did a looping two miles home to finish with 5 miles. I tried to push a little on my run segments in order to balance out the walk segments to my usual average pace. Not sure if that worked, because I kept all 5 miles on one workout and my run pace with my friend was slower than when I was alone. Whatever.
Our goal for the Huntington Beach race is to run together and have fun. I’m going to work on a time goal (and to beat my brother) for the Vegas race and then the next one will just be for fun and to have a friend.
The rest of the weekend included massive amounts of laundry, going to the USC game and a bunch of other kid stuff. By the way, when did Syracuse lost the “men” and become the Orange? We took Dude and our friends brought their two boys, so they all had a great time.
Did you know that 8 year old boys
never stop talking?

See you in Vegas. My wife and I will be there.
Also, that is awesome that you had the kids make dinner like that. I love it.

So cute on the dinner! I’m interested that you are doing another training program, even though you just did a half? I never would have thought to start back with shorter runs if I’d already built up to longer runs. I generally keep myself at a base where I run 4-5 miles on my “short” runs and “6-10″ miles on my long runs. When I’m training for a race, I add in speed and hill workouts–except today. I forgot and just ran outside.
