WIAW – the salad edition
| June 6, 2012 | Posted by Carrie under family, food, What I Ate Wednesday |
My family loves Souplantation. We’ve been big fans for a long time. In fact, when I was pregnant with Dancing Girl, it was my go-to lunch place. (I really believe the old wives tale about the foods you craved when pregnant are the foods your child will enjoy – because my super picky eater loves the place). Seriously, I would walk around my office trying to talk people into going to lunch there with me.
We eat at Souplantation possibly once a week. Okay, it’s usually every 2 weeks, but I really could go there every day. Besides, with the awesome Family Meal coupon we get, dinner for 4 is about $22.00. And everyone gets a huge amount of veggies and my kids will always try something new (that I didn’t have to prepare and throw away if no one likes it).
We had dinner there this past weekend. Here are the family creations. Let’s see if you can guess which salad belongs to which person.
Salad A: pasta, corn and little bit of greens and two pickles
Salad B: sizeable with lots of ranch
Salad C: lots of different toppings including beets
Salad D: two distinct salads, a Ceasar and a zucchini and cheese pile
For the record – everyone got up to fill up drinks and get soup and such so I took the pictures undetected as my family hates isn’t big fans of my food picture obsession taking.
And to round out the week of salads with a final two.
Here is a yummy salad I had for lunch the other day. It was a bunch of leftovers and I added sliced green apples – so yummy.
And a final salad: a watercress, spinach, green onion, strawberry and goat cheese creation. Fantastic. Goat cheese is the best.
I tend to be a ‘kitchen sink’ kind of salad maker. I throw everything I have in the bowl. It was very difficult to make the last salad pictured – I have so many other things just screaming to be put in a salad. But it was so good, I will definitely make it again. And again.
What’s your salad style? Are you a kitchen sink’er? Or do you like the minimalist kind?
What are your guesses for the family salads: four people:
1) me
2) MMT (my husband – I like to call Mr. Math Teacher for newer readers)
3) Dancing Girl (picky eater extrordinaire)
4) Dude (just a typical kid eater)
Don’t miss out on my Sprigs.com Banjees Wrist Wallet giveaway – it ends Thursday night (that’s tomorrow).
Thanks Jen at Peas and Crayons for hosting WIAW. The theme this month is snacking, but I’m rather obsessed with salads, so I’m not following the rules. I’ll get to that next week. In the meantime, I actually posted yesterday about healthy snacking ideas and included my first vl0g – you can find that here.

Hmm, I’ll guess A) Dude, B) Your husband, C) You and D) Dancing girl? Just saw your vlog from yesterday, Carrie- you did such a great job!! I need to venture into vlogging one of these days…
Ooh good guesses… I’ll share the answers tomorrow. Thanks for the feedback on the vlog. It wasn’t so scary – but it’s so hard to go back and watch.
Love the colors on the plates. When the color palette is nice, the food is that much better. Good rule of thumb.
Thank you! We used to have discussions about making the most colorful salads… they’re kind of over my talk about it now.
I’m a kitchen sink kind of salad person
I enjoy trying different greens and a variety of flavor combinations.

Yay for Kitchen Sink’ers!!
Looks like a great place to eat! You are so good with your salads. That is something I really need to work on
I think I get so in to salads because I feel like I can use things up that have been in my fridge for a while.
How fun. I think it’s: A = 4, B = 2, C = 1 and D = 3 !
I love salads! Yours look really good. Today I had a carrot, zucchini and broccoli slaw with almonds and craisins! It was DElicious!
I LOVE broccoli slaw! I’ve made my own a few times when I have a lot of leftover broccoli stems – just peel off the tough outer portion and shred. It’s kind of weird because I don’t really like raw broccoli.
Oh my, that watercress, spinach, green onion, strawberry and goat cheese creation looks delicious! I hope my little one enjoys salads and fruit as much as I do, because I’ve been eating a ton of both during my pregnancy. Especially watermelon and apples. Yum
Oooh! Interesting opportunity to verify the theory. When are you due?
My guess is Dude, MMT, You, Dancing Girl. Fun! I do like to get creatives with my lunch salads, but dinner (side) salads are usually just lettuce and tomato,
Tomatoes are forbidden in my house. Or at least if they aren’t cherry tomatoes and they ooze their insides all over the salad then my husband is horrified. Me, I can eat a tomato like an apple. YUM!
I have an October baby. Good month! I couldn’t eat ice cream when I was pregnant. It left me feeling so awful. Thankfully it went away after each kid was born.
