What’s your take on drinking soda?

As a mom trying to teach my kids healthy habits I have to share one of my hot button issues – soda. Specifically soda in kids. We all have a hot button issue, right?

I used to drink a lot of Diet Coke. But, I used to do a lot of things that weren’t good for me – eat too much, not exercise, all that. I’ve learned a lot and the more I learn, the more comfortable I feel with the changes I’ve made to my life. No one is perfect, we can only try to learn and grow, right?

So, back to my soap box:

Soda is basically an empty calorie can of sugar and chemicals and rarely do people consume just one.

Did you know what the common ingredients in soda are? (my apologies that I can’t remember where I found this information)

  • Carbonated Water

  • Fructose corn syrup or sucrose

  • Caramel color

  • Phosphoric acid

  • Natural flavors

  • Caffeine

  • Citric acid

  • Sodium citrate

  • Sodium benzonate

  • Modified food starch

  • Ester gum

  • Red 40

  • Yellow 5

  • Malic acid

Do you know what much of that means? I don’t. Did you know that the carbonated water ingested with every soda bottle decreases the oxygen in blood by 25% for up to 3 hours. I’m not really sure what that does (I’m still on my first chemistry class), but it doesn’t sound good right?

Here is a great article about all the bad things that soda does – from Nutrition Vista.

Even a Sprite, with no caffeine – has 140 calories for a can. I know many parents are okay with their kids drinking Sprite. But, really do they need 140 empty calories? One can of soda has 26 grams of sugar. Did you know that a regular Hershey Milk Chocolate bar has 31 grams of sugar? So, there’s no caffeine – but there’s a candy bar worth of sugar… we all know what sugar overload does to kids.

Now imagine if kids are drinking regular soda – so they’re getting all the same sugar PLUS the caffeine. Totally unnecessary.

One of the most common weight loss tips is to not consume empty calories and not to drink your calories. Why would you subject your kids to that? Here’s another link to a research study that showed that drinking 2 cans of sugar sweetened soda per day increases a person’s risk of developing Type II Diabetes. In addition, research has shown a link between drinking diet soda and an increased appetite, especially an increase in cravings for sugary foods.

I’m happy that my kids don’t even like soda. I’d like to keep it that way.

The awkward moments come when we have guests in our house. We only drink water or milk (or coffee and tea) with the occasional batch of lemonade. I feel awkward offering our beverage choices sometimes. I know I shouldn’t. It’s my house, that’s the way things go.

I don’t have an answer, I just have to rant sometimes.

I’d love to hear your $.02 on the issue.

Great post, Carrie!  Your house sounds a lot like ours… milk and water, pretty much it!  Of course, L isn’t in school yet so she hasn’t been exposed to soda yet… but I’m hoping she also doesn’t like it!  Sometimes we’ll do a sparkling water/juice mixture and that might work as a ‘mock’ soda when she’s older.

Thanks Laura. I love that my 9 year old loves milk. My daughter doesn’t drink much, although she enjoys the occasional chocolate milk after a long dance class. Do you ever feel pressure to offer guests something else? I do provide soda at parties (not kid parties though).

I forgot to mention that at Dude’s birthday party last month, we offered fruit punch and water (it was at a laser tag place). There were several kids who asked for soda and were surprised that we weren’t providing it. Hey – my party, my rules.

Soda is a no-no in  our house and always has been.  Luckily I have never liked soda so it was easy to implement.  It’s either milk, water or OJ in our house and my kids are fine with it.  I always cringe when I see a little kid with a big gulp filled with soda.  What is that parent thinking?!  Great post!

    • http://familyfitnessfood.com/ Carrie Skoll

Thanks! I don’t remember drinking soda until I was in high school, same with coffee. At least plain coffee isn’t all filled with the chemicals and things as soda.

Soda: big no no for my boys.
they drink water, milk and apple or orange JUICE.  real juice not beverages.
if we have guests and the kids want soda, I say we dont have any.  We do not offer sodas to kids at parties either
we buy soda for parents, Bill still drinks some diet coke once in a while.  I dont drink any soda.

one year at st patrick’s the teacher made “green drink” using sprite and my kids hated the feeling of the bubbles…so I was really happy!

It makes me happy when my kids don’t like it too. My husband gave up drinking soda about 6 years ago, I think I gave it up about 4. I had a Diet Coke one day last year and it was terrible.

  • Sarah MacIntyre

I have the worst addiction to diet soda. I try to go a few days without but soon have the headaches. I need to go longer I know it. I also know it is the reason behind not able to lose those last few pounds!

    • http://familyfitnessfood.com/ Carrie Skoll

The headache is really just the caffeine, not specifically the soda. Not that substituting one vice for another is better if you were to replace the soda with another caffeine source – but, maybe tea would help? Can you at least cut back on the soda a bit? Good luck.

  • Runnermaybe

My husband drinks Soda and Ice Tea, I drink water, sometimes I will have a soda but not that often.

    • http://familyfitnessfood.com/ Carrie Skoll

The longer I went without drinking soda, the worse it tasted when I did try one.

I used to be addicted to diet soda, but thankfully no more.  Now I need to cut this coffee addiction! :)

    • http://familyfitnessfood.com/ Carrie Skoll

Coffee – my comfort food. Sigh.

I don’t drink soda (I used to, though… in fact, when I was pregnant, the only thing that would settle my stomach was a regular coke. Yuck.) However, I like to drink a lot of sparkling water, so this post is making me think twice about that…  I had no idea the carbonation was that bad for me…

    • http://familyfitnessfood.com/ Carrie Skoll

I never made that connection between the carbonation in sparkling water and soda either. Interesting though. I’m going to read more. I’ll share what I find.

Good luck with it. Thanks for visiting and commenting.

I grew up drinking water and soda was always an occasional treat, now that I am a mother I do the same thing! I never buy soda for my house unless I am mixing drinks when company comes over! The things you listed above are very scary! More people should know whats going in their bodies! Great discussion!!

    • http://familyfitnessfood.com/ Carrie Skoll

This did turn out to be a great discussion. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I’m glad I’m not alone.

  • Kyria_W

I grew up in a household where water was the drink of choice. Even when we got to the age that we wanted soda just because we hadn’t had it very much, my dad would make us drink a glass of water first and then we could have a juice or a soda if we were still thirsty. Usually we weren’t. Once I could buy my own drinks, I tried soda and to be honest I didn’t really like it. I am all for not only keeping your kids away from soda, but offering healthy choices to guests when they come over. They can go home and guzzle a 2 liter bottle of Pepsi afterward if they like.

    • http://familyfitnessfood.com/ Carrie Skoll

I live that your dad made you drink a glass of water first. It’s like that saying that if you’re felling hungry, if an apple will satisfy you, then you are truly hungry, but of you only want junk food then it’s a craving and you should stay out of the kitchen. Thanks for sharing.

My wife and I used to drink a lot of soda and even at that time, we wouldn’t let our kids have any.  I cut out soda (among other things) over 3 years ago.  Since then my wife has cut back, too.  My kids?  They really don’t ask for it.  We do let them occasionally (maybe once every couple months), but even then they really don’t drink it- it’s too spicy they say.  We’re more than happy they don’t like it!

    • http://familyfitnessfood.com/ Carrie Skoll

So funny – my kids describe soda as ‘spicy’ too. I could never understand it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I grew up drinking Pop. (I”m from Chicago so soda is pop to me!)
Unfortunately and my sister and I both vowed our kids wouldn’t drink it and so far so good. We were never big pop buyers for our house either. We would get it with a pizza or something fast food. I gave up pop for the new year so I have been pop free since dec 31 2011.  lol. I know not long but it’s a good start for me!

    • http://familyfitnessfood.com/ Carrie Skoll

Congrats!!! That’s awesome. Thanks for sharing.

I had a college roommate from Chicago and she called soda ‘pop’, we used to tease her endlessly. :-)

  • Michel Martin

Oh I forgot! In one of my WW meetings a few years ago someone talked about the chemicals that are in diet coke and I cringe now when I think of all my friends who MUST have that large diet coke from McD’s every day. sigh.

    • http://familyfitnessfood.com/ Carrie Skoll

That makes me think of it in the light of a drug for sure. You get enough chemicals, then it can become one.

  • Jennifer

My son never drinks soda…he is nine and so far so good.  :)   I cringe when I see young kids drinking it.

    • http://familyfitnessfood.com/ Carrie Skoll

My son is 9, too. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

  • jillconyers

We don’t buy soda so it’s never in the house. Occasionally when we go out to dinner we will order sodas. My kids had never even had a soda until they were about 8 or 9. We for the most part drink water. When my kids were little they were often the only kids with water in the sippy cups :)

    • http://familyfitnessfood.com/ Carrie Skoll

Oh yea – don’t get me started on the things I saw in dippy cups. Disgusting!!!! Thanks for sharing.

  • http://wecanbegintofeed.blogspot.com/ Elle

I admit to occasionally buying diet Tonic because I think the quinine helps my leg cramps… but have been avoiding it and actually haven’t had any for about 6 months or so.  Now that I have read your post, I will not be buying it again… I had no idea that carbonated beverages affected the oxygen levels in the blood!

Have never been a real soda drinker so that is not an issue for us.

But I don’t think you should feel awkward about what you serve in your own home… your choices are your own and I would certainly respect that.  Water is always an option for people who don’t want anything else.

    Great post, thanks!

    • http://familyfitnessfood.com/ Carrie Skoll

My mom used to suffer from horrible leg cramps and tried cutting back on soda to help. It didn’t really, what has helped is exercise. :-)
I’m glad your cramps are getting better. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  • http://familyfitnessfood.com/ Carrie Skoll

I do think it’s a really valuable lessons for our kids to see that we aren’t perfect. And it’s good that you can still show them that you don’t have to live according to anyone else’s rules (when you are an adult) and that it’s all about balance. There are far worse things out there than drinking soda. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  • http://familyfitnessfood.com/ Carrie Skoll

I hope it works for your sweet tooth. Thanks for commenting.

  • http://familyfitnessfood.com/ Carrie Skoll

Do you find the same enjoyment in the soda when you drink it so less frequently now? When I drank one last year, I couldn’t stand it.

  • Coco

My son is almost 18, so I just try to buy whatever he wants so he will want to eat at home. That means we do have soda (Coke and Mountain Dew!) but he mostly drinks Gatorade (at least it’s lower in calories) and he still drinks lots of milk.

    • http://familyfitnessfood.com/ Carrie Skoll

I love that he still drinks milk. My son is such a huge milk drinker, I have to imagine he’ll continue that way.
