Today’s Blogger Challenge topic is to share “Something You Always Think What If About.”
I really think that What If’s are a dangerous road to travel. I do try to live my days without regrets and I think that What If’s are a way of regretting decisions that you’ve made.
I am really looking forward to reading other bloggers’ responses to this question as I’m wondering if other people look at What If’s the same way that I do.
When thinking about this topic, I did think of a decision that I made a long time ago. It’s not a decision I regret, but just one that changed our lives and took us down the path we are on now.
When I was finishing up graduate school, I had begun to do some job searching. After being flown to Boston for some interviews, I was offered a job with a large aerospace company in their HR Management development program. I made the decision to turn down the job because my husband and I were beginning to discuss trying to become parents. That decision then led to the decision to become a stay-at-home mom which was also something I wasn’t planning to do.
Now, it’s 12 years later. I could wonder how different our lives would be if I was a traditional working mom. What if things were different? But, I wouldn’t change a thing.
On a lighter note… I also think you can look at What if’s as a thing to avoid in being active. “What if” you didn’t spend your evening sitting on the couch watching tv? “What if” you went for a walk after dinner? How would that make you feel?
And finally – I mentioned briefly yesterday that I was being careful regarding the pictures I used on my blog. I read this article yesterday about the use of images on your blog. Even if you don’t make money through your blog, read this… It affects us all. Here is the link to the article.
I do not dwell on ‘what ifs’. The ones that occasionally come up are what if I started running earlier? and what if I took that job offer instead of accepting my husband’s proposal and moving to the UK? The first one is what it is (better late than never right?), the second one I feel strongly I made the right choice!
I’m with you…I try not to ask that what if too often! I’ve passed on job opportunities in the past and currently for the better of my family. One thing that I always go back to is that those jobs aren’t going anywhere but my family will forever be better for me being there! You’ve made a great choice!! i also try to not ever dwell on what ifs…but they do come across my mind. i have been anxious about the career path i have chosen this year because it is so different from the one i imagined and planned out for myself just 4 years ago. But this just feels right:) so i am just going to go after it with all my heart and just make it the best i can! Julia @ Pain, Pride and Perseverance recently posted..My MN Pups!
When something feels right, it usually is. I’m kind of working through a huge decision right now and I keep saying it out loud as a way to let it kind of wash over me so I can see how it feels. I’m not quite ready to share it with the world, but soon. I have to go with what feels right. I’m going for that.
I don’t play what-if. I don’t even let myself entertain those thoughts…way too slippery of a slope for me! I’ll obsess! Jan recently posted..Busy Running Mom
What Ifs… are dangerous. We cannot change the past, and this is where I have seen my mind try to go when I ponder What Ifs.
No doubt my first marriage was a mistake, a train-wreck on top of a plane-crash best describes it. That decade, largely lost, so many mistakes made; I’d sacrifice a stuffed animal if i could go back to the start of that decade and choose differently.
But I cannot, and i have come to accept that. What i can do, is make better choices in my present day and future days from what I experience in that lost decade.
Same goes for the many days of life spent in poor health. I can’t go back and change those specific days, even though I do ponder, what if I was healthy when I was 33? I am making better choices now, and plan to keep on doing so, with the help of the experience I’ve had in past days. Patrick recently posted..Bloggers Beware
I do believe that the crappy decades and events shape us into who we are. It all might suck big time, but we wouldn’t be the same people without having gone through whatever it was.
Living healthy is something that your body will benefit from each and every day ahead of you. Looking back is totally unnecessary.
I think “what ifs” can stunt our growth if we dwell on them but I also think in order to make wise decisions in the present, it’s helpful to look back and reflect on what results, good or bad, could have been different in the choices we’ve made. “What ifs” can only be beneficial if we are learning from them to move forward

That is an excellent way of using ‘What ifs’ in a good way. It would be awful to keep repeating the same mistakes because we were unwilling to consider the lessons learned.
I don’t really like what if’s either, except in a positive light. For example I was always afraid to approach companies, I was afraid of hearing no, so I tell myself, but what if they say yes? Kerri O recently posted..30 Days to a Faster 5k
If I start to think “What if?” I immediately try and direct my attention to the present moment, but I like how you took something negative and turned it positive! Nice post and I will be reading that article, thank you sharing. Lisa @ RunWiki recently posted..Nature Box Product Review and Giveaway
First, that link to the information about the pictures is so IMPORTANT. Thanks for sharing it.
I don’t try to second guess myself very often… no point.. I think things happen for a reason and work out the way they are supposed to. Intresting topic, though, isn’t it?
I think we all think “what if” but if you check out my post I firmly believe every decision I have made has led me to where I am right now and I wouldn’t change a thing!!! Thanks for sharing the post about pics….scary stuff! Toni recently posted..What If?
Thanks for linking to the post about copyright issues. I have definitely been more careful lately, although I wouldn’t even know how to screen old posts for those types of photos. I mostly use my own or the cheesey (free) clip art, or product picutres, but I have posted some with “source” credits. I don’t know the specific legal issues, but I think people who post the “proof” versions of race pictures are running risks too. I posted one horrible one as a joke, but usually fork over the $$. After all, the photographers did have to work to take the pics and they might be cheaper if more people bought them instead of using the proofs! I agree on the taking charge of your health ‘what ifs’. They really are better late than never.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that can’t go there. Dangerous!

There are always what ifs! But if we focus too much on that, we will keep ourselves from trying anything!
