A few updates

Happy Monday friends!! I hope everyone had a nice weekend.
I feel like an update is in order on a few things:
First, my toe and surrounding issues. To catch anyone up, I have a bone spur in top of the joint in my big toe on my right foot. I went for a cortisone injection 2 weeks ago to hope to reduce the inflammation in the joint. I was a big baby about the injection, but it really wasn’t a big deal. And, it seems to be working. I was able to wear these pretty shoes for my daughter’s Bat Mitzvah.
Although the night before the Bat Mitzvah, I wore a different pair of heels and had some major issues. But, I realized the problem with the black shoes was that the shoe was rubbing right on top of the bone spur, so it was hurting from the outside. So much for those shoes. But, the silver ones were fine! YAY! And the achiness in the toe has gone away and I feel like I have a little better range of motion. So, double YAY!!! The doctor said he can do another injection in 3 months, but the next step after that is surgery. I’m hoping to put that off for as long as possible.
Second, my left ankle. This one has a pain right on the ankle bone that has been there for MONTHS! Occasionally, it hurts when I tilt my ankle in, but it usually only hurts to the touch. My chiropractor didn’t think it was anything he could help with, so I went to an orthopedist. He thinks it’s a nerve issue and I’ve been using a Lidocain patch daily for a few months. It’s still not getting better. Last Friday, I went for an MRI to see what’s going on. The doctor doesn’t think there’s a stress fracture, and he wants to give me an injection there, but he said if there is a stress fracture, the injection will make things worse. So, the MRI is really to confirm that it’s a nerve and not a stress fracture. I can’t get back to see the Ortho for 2 weeks, so I’ll have an update on the MRI then. But, an ankle MRI is really not that big of a deal I actually took a little nap during the test. Did you know that MRIs of areas with more intricate bone structure take longer than if it was a simple spot? Now you do
Third, now my right ankle is being cranky. I have a ganglean cyst in that ankle that was diagnosed a year and half ago. For a long time, I wore compression on it on a regular basis and that seemed to control things. The pain is actually on the bone and feels like a pinch, so I’m not sure if it’s the cyst that’s flared up, or if it’s sympathy pain with the nerve on the other ankle, or if it’s a real nerve issue, but it feels kind of similar. I’m going to go back to the compression route and see if that will help. I wore a Tommy Copper sock all day yesterday and it’s been feeling pretty good.
Stupid feet and ankles.
When I was in high school, I was on Drill Team and had tons of problems with my ankles (sprains on mulitple occasions). Before that, I rode horses and I remember my trainer telling me that my ankles were weak and I needed to strengthen them. I guess they’re still weak and a problem. Ugh. (which I only add here to remind people that running doesn’t ruin your body – and is not to blame)
I did go for a run this past Friday. The first Friday in forever where I had a big chunk of time to myself. So, I didn’t waste the morning away trying to fix my broken computer, and I went out for a run at the beach. It was a spectacularly beautiful morning. I haven’t been running that much, but I’m less than 6 months from Ragnar, so it’s time to get going. When I have been running, I’ve been doing a 2min:30sec interval and I really like that plan. The 30 second walk break is just enough for me to let my HR come down a tiny bit. So, on Friday, I was going to run for an hour. No set distance, just time. If only the above mentioned ankle hadn’t gotten cranky 45 minutes in, I would have been much happier.
The plan for this week is to try to get in 2 runs and they’re both going to be 3o minutes. I’m going to see if short runs can get done before the ankle gets mad.
And finally – my computer. I am super happy to report that I was able to hook the computer (that I dropped down the stairs last week) up to an external monitor (the tv) and retrieve everything off the hard drive! YAY!!!!!!!
Which means that the hard drive still works fine. Which is great, because that drive is only a year old (my computer got eaten by a virus a year ago and I had to replace the hard drive). So, now I’m trying to see if I can have that drive put into my son’s computer because his hard drive is failing. And MMT is the lucky one getting a new computer – he’s getting a Chrome Book (have you seen them? Such a neat computer – a super affordable way to utilize all the cloud based technology, works perfect for him and what he uses his home computer for).
Doesn’t the screen of my broken laptop look awful?
So, I guess that was a long update. What else – we finally put up the Halloween decorations at our house, so I guess it’s time for that. (now let’s see if I can get the pictures into this post since I really still can’t sync Photo Stream to my non-existent computer – which obviously worked since you’re seeing pictures, sorry they’re kind of small).
Anyone else have terrible ankles? Misery loves company.
