Too much? and a winner

What is too much?
The phrase “everything in moderation” tends to get overused. But, it’s so true.
We know the easy ones… don’t eat too many sweets, indulgent foods are good in moderation, don’t drink too much alcohol, etc. etc.

But, how does that apply to working out?
Runners are victims of doing too much and pay the price with injuries. Don’t increase your mileage too quickly, mix up your workouts with cross training, etc. etc.
Non runners get hurt too. I have a friend that is a die-hard elliptical fan. She does that sucker for a full hour every time she works out. She recently developed hip pain that was rather unexplained. Turns out it went away when she started to switch up her workouts.
Moderation.

Along those lines, I was proud of myself yesterday. I feel like I’m back into my good running routine. I like to schedule running for three days a week. With one rest day, that leaves three for cross training. I normally seriously lack motivation to workout at home. I’m thankful that I have access to and time to get to the gym when I want to cross train. I have a few pieces of equipment at home and most of them are gathering dust.
Yesterday, I did a strength workout at home! It wasn’t anything super exciting, but it was about 15 minutes that left me breathing hard and with a little bit of sweat. I did upper body weights and between each set I would do jumping jacks, mountain climbers, push ups or planks. I didn’t follow an official plan, but it was very satisfying. And, I”m sore today – so I guess I did a good job.
So, now that I’ve got a little motivation to strength train at home, I’m inspired to keep up the routine and keep the balance to my workouts. Too much of anything can be bad, I need to utilize all the tools in my closet to keep some balance.
After the fact, I found this nice workout on Pinterest that I’m going to try on my next strength day.

Moderation is so important and something often forgotten about! Since becoming a mom my home treadmill and elliptical have gotten lots of use during naps and early morning.
Great job getting in your workouts. Thanks for commenting.
It’s so important to remember that even good things (like exercise) can be overdone! Great reminder.
Thanks Laura.
great job on the weights workout!

Thank you!
Great post!!! So true we need to mix it up! I love the quotes about moderation. You are right the reason we feel that “everything in moderation” gets overused is because it is so important and we NEED to be reminded of it constantly! stopping by from fitness friday Blessings~

So right. It’s overused because it’s so true. I hope people don’t ignore the advice as a result.
So excited Carrie, thanks! I agree with everything in moderation. I would love to run every day but I know that my body would rebel if I tried it. So, I implement cross training. Better overall for my body anyways:)

I’d love to eat a big bowl of ice cream every day too – but, my body would rebel.
I workout at home and no dust
Sometimes I miss the gym membership but setting up a workout room at home was one of the best decisions I ever made as far as consistent strength and cross training.
Have a great weekend Carrie!

I do think that if I had a full gym or more of an ‘official set up’, that I’d do it more. But, I’ve just got a few things in the corner of my bedroom and do what I can. Maybe when I have a job outside the house, it will happen.
Great post!

Thanks Katherine.
I work out at home but I definitely need to do a better job using the equipment I have. When my free year at a local gym ran out in May I was really tempted to join a gym closer to home that I knew I would use more often but then I thought about all my workout stuff that I need to put to good use.

A free year gym membership! How awesome. I hope you got good use of it. Good luck putting your equipment to use.
I was just writing about this awhile ago: sometimes we forget that moderation is about more than just the “bad” stuff. I do struggle with overdoing it on my workouts!
After an injury that left me rehabbing for two years, I’ve finally been cleared for normal workouts again. I am *really* trying hard not to overdo it, but man is that hard! Thanks for the post and reminding me that moderation is key
Happy weekend!

So glad to hear that you can resume normal workouts. Happy Weekend to you too!
good post! I love workout out at home, but without a gym membership that’s about my only option. It forces me outdoors a lot of the time and gets me a lot of variety in my workouts! I enjoy it!
Moderation is something that is SO important. Too much of a good thing, can be bad. I used to tell my clients, if you eat healthy but TOO much of the healthy, it makes it just as awful as a high-fat meal. I have problems with this when it comes to bread, pasta, so we try and substitute our trigger foods for other options in order to keep moderation in check!
Sometimes on my rest days, I do yoga at home, then I take a little walk. It’s nice to do something different although it’s sometimes hard to not want to get out and RUN!
Also, I don’t think there is such thing as too many strawberries. Sorry to be disagreeable.
