I’m tired of going to the gym

(Editor’s note (does that sound official?) I’m having a problem uploading pictures – new WP update and my uploads are failing – sorry – this post is going essentially naked, except for the few images I was able to insert by url)
I’m tired of going to the gym. The gym I belong to is 2 miles from my house. It’s a woman’s only place and is really very nice. But, I hate going there.
I didn’t say I’m tired of working out – I’m just tired of going to the gym.
With my new found love of strength training, all I need to workout is a stability ball and some hand weights. I’ve got those.
But, I still need to get in some cardio sessions. And, since my foot is still not 100%, I can’t just go out for a run, I’m stuck with going for a walk for an easy workout or to the gym for a sweat fest cardio workout.
I want to have all those amenities in my own house. I think the best investment for us right now would be a stationary bike. I saw a nicely priced one at Sports Chalet the other day.
Each year for our wedding anniversary (which is in 2 weeks), my husband and I get ourselves a gift of something for us together. We don’t really exchange gifts with each other, we just buy something together.
So, I’m left with gently encouraging my husband that this would be a great addition to our house. He’s not opposed to the idea and told me I need to do some research. I’ve been thinking about it a lot and really think this piece of equipment would get some good use. Especially as I go back to work, I think this might be key to keeping me active as I add a huge commitment to my day.
Do you have a home gym? What’s in it? Do you have a cardio option? Any exercise bike recommendations? I’m linking up with Fitness Friday today – go check out Jill’s great blog hop.

The bike is a great low impact option but you should check out indoor spin bikes too. Speaking from a trainer’s point of view you can get a much better workout on those, they don’t require electricity or take up as much space. You can always find a spin video to give you some workout ideas.
Thanks for the advice! I don’t think I knew the difference between a stationary bike and a spin bike. I’ll look into it.
I was just thinking about this today as I looked at the newspaper ads. I really would love to have a treadmill so I could run at home instead of going to the gym. I think the bike is a great idea:)

I think I need to explore Craigs List for a bike. There are always people that buy good stuff and don’t use it.
I think it really depends on what your workout goals are and how you want to spend your money. I’m not a big fan of cardio machines; too easy for me to just zone out on them and do long slow distance. Since my goal is to create lean muscle, I prefer to invest in tools that let me do HIIT cardio intervals via plyometrics and metabolic strength drills. I have a Bosu, a TRX and a Ugi ball that are all great options for me!

Those do sound like great options. Thanks for the suggestions.
I just read all of the comments above… and I am a cardio queen, too, so I would go for a piece of cardio equipment that you will use! I wouldn’t have an exercise bike or an elliptical cause I know I would never use them. If you can’t run, a treadmill is no good, and if you can run you will go outside…heck, you live in CA right?
The spin bike might be an option, but I would sure go use one before I invested in it. And I would also try one of those skier things.. Nordic Track? They have always intrgued me but I haven’t actually tried one.
I hate the gym… never go. I love to work out at home, too.
Good luck as you keep investigating. Will be looking forward to your decision.

I do agree that a treadmill isn’t the best cardio option for me. I can almost always run/walk outside. I would love an elliptical machine, but bikes are so much more reasonably priced.
I saw an exercise bike at the Y last week that has one of those video screens where you can put in a virtual ride and pretend like you are doing the Tour De France or whatever. I thought that would be pretty cool and might make it less boring. But I’m sure they are like a million dollars or something.
If you can’t do weight bearing at the gym what about a rowing machine. Those are GREAT!

I do love the idea of a rowing machine. I don’t really have any restrictions on my workouts, I’m just trying to hard to have a more flexible workout option at home. I’m thankful to live in a nice enough area that running/walking can almost always happen outside, so I know a treadmill isn’t the best choice for me.
There are some pretty amazing cardio machines out there. If only I had a deep enough pocket to have those things in my home.
If you like cycling and already own a bike, you might consider a bike trainer instead of a stationary bike. You attach your own bike, which is much more comfortable and just like riding outdoors. I would also recommend a TRX for home workouts, it’s an amazing and versatile tool – the best substitute for weights IMO.

I belong to a gym , but have stuff at home too and love the option of either. At home we have treadmill, elliptical, stability ball, BOSU, bike trainers, and a few hand weights.

With that much of a set up at home, do you go to the gym often?
Giving up my gym membership, reluctantly at first, was one of the best health and fitness decisions I’ve ever made! I started with a few hand weights, a pull up bar, a mat and a stability ball. That was everything I needed to do a total body workout. Since then I’ve gradually added to my workout arsenal as needed. I would love to add a treadmill to my workout room!
Good luck with finding a bike!
I just reminded myself I needed to update WP but now I hesitate to do it. Ugh!

The stability ball is the best investment. I love mine. Especially after I recently figured out how to add air to it.
I think that would be a great addition, especially for a runner who would need a good cross training option at home. I also love DVDs like TurboJam or Cathe or Jillian. Medicine balls. Resistance bands. A step/bench. Those are the key thins I use at home besides what you already mentioned.

I hear great things about Cathe. I remember too that you linked to a lot of her videos with BBB. I don’t have a step, I use the small step from my kitchen when I need it
I use a pull up bar, the ball, and then resistance bands, you can get a KILLER workout with those, up to 100 lbs of resistance!
I do love resistance bands. And my weights. I did a strength workout yesterday at home, a short and intense 30 minutes and I even worked up a sweat. Love that.
I do have a gym in my home and have….a stability ball, step, hand weights up to 25 pounds, EZ Curl bar with enough weights to equal 100 pounds, weight bench, mats, bands (which I don’t really use), treadmill, and a Pilates reformer. Plus enough DVDs, books, and mags to incite a massive fire if someone thought it was kindlin’.
I’d be thrilled if a squat rack landed in my gym in some sort of freak squat rack storm. Thinking it’s not going to happen.
Advice: get the bike! But no advice on what one.

Thanks Carli. You’ve got a great set up. I’ll look into sending a squat rack storm your way
No gym here, but we have a trainer for a bike and a large collections of Spinerval videos, and several hand weights. Not that I’ve actually used any of that in recent years. My husband does, though.
I like the trainer idea, but price wise it’s not that much different than getting a stationary bike and with the trainer I have to drag my bike inside.
We have a treadmill and an elliptical, and they both get good use. We have a recumbent bike that I’d thought we’d given away, but I found it in a dark corner of the basement.
If you like using the bike at the gym, I’m sure you will use it at home.
I don’t have the watermark plug-in (although maybe I should once it’s updated) and my photos are fine after WP update.

It seems like pictures fixed themselves. I need to remember to wait a few days to update WP and let things catch up.
Thanks for the bike advice.
Have you looked at the Fit Desk? It’s a bike with a built-in desk feature so you can use your computer while you bike. I work from home so this is really tempting for me. I may get one of those this next year.

I did look at the fit desk. It’s such a great concept. The reviews say it’s better as an option for not sitting and working, but it’s not a sturdy enough bike for a really good workout. Bummer.
I would absolutely LOVE a piece of cardio equipment in my house! It would be so convenient for days I don’t have a sitter or there is nasty weather.
I get in those bored funks with the gym sometimes, with running, with videos, etc.

Yes! That’s what I’m hoping. I’d love a bike to be able to do a 30 minute interval kind of workout a few times a week. I really need that to be my workout for today, I need to get my butt to the gym and am rather unmotivated today. Must rally.
I haven’t been to the gym in FOREVER, even though I recently joined Gold’s. Quitting my old gym and the holidays have thrown me off of my routine big time. By the way, for some reason your blog will not load in my Google Reader. Maybe it’s related to the problems you are having with the new WP update and uploading photos? I just had to delete your blog from my reader subscriptions, and then it wouldn’t let me re-subscribe. It says “feed not found”. Hmmmm.

Hmm… weird about my blog feed. Thanks for letting me know. I subscribe through Google Reader and it’s working fine. I did a check through Feedburner and it shows a no issues either. Are you still having the problem?
I had to delete it and re-subscribe, but it seems to be okay now. Thanks.
