Research In the News – Right to Know and the Importance of Fitness
A few interesting news items have popped up in the last few days that I wanted to talk about.
First – big news to those of us following the trail of CA Prop. 37. A study was released yesterday showing a link between genetically modified foods and mammary tumors, kidney and liver damage and other serious illnesses. This is the first long-term peer reviewed study showing a link between disease and GMO’s. While this is only the first study to show a link, at this point I agree that it concretely proves that consumers should have a right to know what is in their food. Until additional conclusive research is completed, let people decide for themselves. Go read CARightToKnow.org for more information.
Second – An article was published in the NY Times on Monday about the connection between disease and weight. While the findings of the research raise additional questions, what researchers are concluding is that fitness plays a HUGE role in a person’s overall health. Basically, thin and unfit is just as bad as overweight and unfit. The key connection is fitness.

Did you read about either of these news pieces? Food and fitness… sounds like they go rather hand in hand. Stop worrying about being skinny… just eat real food and get some exercise.
I laughed when you said “stop worrying about being skinny. Just eat real food and workout” because that it not as easy as you made it sound! It’s such a fine line. If you don’t eat enough while being active, its harmful. If you eat too much. It’s harmful.
I do find out that when i stop worrying and just eat when I’m hungry I lose weight easier.
Yes, when you stop worrying and just eat when you’re hungry things do start to fall in place. Yes, it’s not easy, but when you break it down to those small pieces, it can be.
I haven’t read either, but those totally make sense. Our bodies are MADE to workout. They are made to workout a whole lot more than we are using them. Think of 1000 years ago or even 200 years ago–most people worked HARD for their food, all day long. We are sedentary most of the day and then pat ourselves on the back when we go for an hour-long workout (myself included).

That’s a good way to say it – we pat ourselves on the back for working out. (Typed while sitting on my butt)
Thanks for keeping us updated. I received several emails in the last couple days from CA Right to know, but haven’t linked through to read the study. So glad this information is getting out before the election! Yes on 37!

I have to admit that I found the Yes on 37 commercial to be rather sensationalist. Both sides are putting up a huge fight. But the research coming in is very interesting. Consumer education can never be a bad thing.
