We Have a Right to Know – Label GMOs
The issue at hand isn’t telling companies to stop using GMO’s. The issue is telling companies that if they use a GMO ingredient – then the manufacturer needs to label GMOs.
I wrote an introductory article on this topic a few weeks ago and introduced you all to the official website for Yes on 37. Please read my first post here. Since that time, there has been a lot of good information that has come out on the topic. Today, I want to share that with all of you.
One of the main question that comes up when I talk to people about Prop 37 is that people wonder if fresh food on the produce shelves is genetically modified. At first, my thought was that the GMO’s are in our processed foods. But, then this news item came out yesterday:
Monsanto is often made out to be the big bad GMO guy. But, another company Sygenta has been selling GMO corn for at least a decade according to the above article. Both companies site research that shows that the long term impact of consuming GMOs is unknown. The above article concludes that people have no idea what they are eating because the companies are not required to tell us.
That’s the point: all that Prop 37 is asking is for companies to label GMOs! Go ahead and continue to use GMOs if that’s what makes business sense – just allow consumers the right to know.
There’s a lot of blogging going on about this topic this week. Please read the following articles:
The fight is getting a little messy. There’s a lot of money being thrown around. One of the largest pesticide companies is becoming the largest financial supporter of the no on Prop 37 campaign. Read about that here.
And finally, please read this article from Jessica Gottlieb: How Do Bloggers Know When a Publicist is Lying? She shares with us a story about how bloggers are being manipulated in the fight against Prop 37 and may not even realize it.
I know I linked up a lot of information today. But, this is a really important issue. Prop 37 is only asking for a label change to foods. Give consumers the right to know what is in our food.
Please help out and share this information with voters in California and people around the country who care about their food supply. What happens in November in California will have a far reaching impact around the country.
100% agree. It’s not about whether or not we want to consume GMO’s it’s about our right to know what’s in our food. Difficult to make an informed decision when we aren’t working with all the info. Thanks for bringing Prop 37 info.

Thank you for your support. Yes, informed choices is what the ballot initiative is asking for.
I’m sharing this now! SO important!

Thank you so much! I appreciate your helping to spread the word.
As I sit here, I have zero idea if what I eat is GMO or not. And i admit to being under-aware of the importance here. Common sense tells me I’d rather mother nature to do the work and let someone else package it and thats it.
I have seen some twitter chatter on the topic as some of my tweeps retweet on the topic. This is who I see retweeted often…

Common sense is a good thing. Thanks for the referral on the Label_GMOs, I hadn’t found that one. Good information there.
Great post Carrie. I have a Yes to 37 post for later this week. I don’t even live in Cali but the results of this have far reaching influence on the country.

I think there will be a big national impact. I also think the politics/food relationship is really interesting. And complicated. Looking forward to reading your post.
I think “Flavr Savr” tomatoes were one of the first GMO foods (years ago). I’m not too worried about GMO food, but I personally support labelling.

I remember Flavr Savr tomatoes. I think the thing is that now the produce doesn’t have a gimmicky name to let us know. On top of that, a lot of the genetic modifications are changing the way that the produce responds to pesticides. Some of the modifications make them more tolerant of increased pesticides. I’m not a fan of that. Yay for organic options.
Thanks for sharing my link. It’s such an important issue- the fresh produce piece is really scary. I’m hopeful that this will pass- it should have already been taken care of! It’s crazy that we have to fight to know when GMO’s are in our food.

You’re welcome, you wrote a great article. It blows me away when there is more food information shared in other countries. We say we are the world leaders – let’s back that up.
I am all for it. I think that we should know what we are eating, not so we can necessarily avoid eating it, but so we can be aware and make choices based on the facts!
