With everyone writing all about their wrap ups of 2012 and their goals for 2013, you’d think that I’d be here jumping in to all that productivity. 2013 has already started out to be a huge year of change. First, we were able to get away for a grown up weekend over New Years Eve (we usually do a family thing at home) to celebrate both our wedding anniversary on December 30th and the wedding of a friend of my husband’s on New Year’s Eve. A super fun way to say Happy New Year. In the middle of all of that, I received a job offer and coordinated the flurry of activity that enabled me to start my new job this week!
Talk about change! I’m a working mom now. Don’t expect much talk about my actual job on here, but I’m sure I will be talking a lot about how I’m holding together the precarious balance of my family, my job and staying healthy.
After several weeks of parties and entertaining and all that brings, I’m really ready to get back to a routine. One that includes preparing healthy meals, getting in a good amount of exercise and does not include all the amazing treats that appear during the holidays. My friend Coco summed it all up well about getting back on a healthy path – go read her post.
The great news about my new job is that the dress code is very casual and I can be comfortable enough to not need to change clothes in order to get in a walk on my lunch hour. Even better news is that I did that yesterday. Also good news about the job is that I’m working 4 days a week. Not only does this help with the transition from SAHM, but I also know I can get in some good exercise on F-Su. Oh, and even more awesome news about the job is that it’s a super small office (me and 2 others) and I’m just not seeing it like the type of place where there is always a break room full of treats and a birthday cake on a daily basis. So far, I’ve packed my lunch both days and it seems like everyone else does the same. Oh, and did I mention that it’s exactly 3.1 miles from my house? How is that for my 5K karma?
The most you’ll hear about my job is this: it’s a business to business advertising agency. I’m sort of an assistant with most things but not the creative stuff. The products are rather high tech, but I do have to say that my blogging experience and social media experience did help in getting the job and I will be involved in some of that end of our client work. Yay for blogging!!!
I’ll wrap up with some scenes from our weekend.
we went to Pachanga Casino – I was a big winner on $.05 slots!
The first of many glasses of wine throughout the weekend.
We went on a winery tour – highly recommend the Grapeline Vineyard Tour – they picked us up at our hotel and we went to 4 wineries and had lunch. They have locations in Temecula, Santa Barbara and Paso Robles.
Some silly photo ops.
Winter time vines – still so pretty.
The weather was pretty stormy, but it made for some gorgeous pictures.
I made sure to get in a few workouts at the hotel gym. Good space for walking lunges.
Embassy Suites had a nice gym.
We went to a wine bar to watch the horrible Sun Bowl, but at least had some awesome food.
More wine tasting.
All dressed up for New Year’s Eve
The wedding reception was in the barrel room at the winery. Beautiful setting – yet FREEZING cold. Note to self: dress better for an outdoor and heaterless reception when it’s 30* outside. This wimpy girl had icicles for feet. But, we danced the whole night so that helped.
I hope everyone had a super amazing New Year. Cheers to 2013. I hope to settle down into a routine that includes regular blogging soon. Maybe I just need to learn how to wrap things up more quickly. There are some bloggers that I love that are so concise and awesome… I need to learn that.
Anyone else do something completely different for New Years? Any advice for a newly working mom?
Happy New Year! Sounds like you’re off to a great start with an adults-only New Years and a new job! I don’t have kids, so no advice to share, unfortunately. Maybe these things just take time and experience to figure out? Heather @ Better With Veggies recently posted..A Different Kind of Resolution
All I can say is try to get as much done on the weekends as you can! I am a single mom, work 30 miles (in DC) away from my house, am marathon training and work 40 hour weeks. Every errand, load of laundry, etc. that I get done on the weekends is one less during the week.
Yay, Carrie! Great news on the new job- especially four days a week and 3.1 miles away. Sounds perfect. I’m sure you’ll quickly figure out how to balance it all. Beautiful pictures of you two! Laura @ Mommy Run Fast recently posted..How does tapering affect you?
Gorgeous pictures, and congrats on the job! I don’t have kids so can’t really give working mom advice, but in terms of time management I would figure out what maybe *doesn’t* really need to be done. (As in, the dusting can always wait!) But I have no doubt you will find the right balance between all the important things and people in your life. Happy New Year! You look great. Love the second to last picture, you look stunning there! And holy big win on the nickels! LOL I love playing the nickel slots. So much less risky! As for the working mom thing, my biggest tip is to stay organized. Not that I always do it, but I know it helps tremendously when I do. jan recently posted..Favorite Images of 2012
Yay on the new job, and super-yay on taking the time to give us an update! And thanks so much for the shout-out to my back-on-track post.
I love that your job is 5K from your house. That has to be a good sign!
You seem like an organized person, and you were juggling school and a long commute before, so I think you will do fine with this transition.
I had an incredibly pitiful NYE — organizing all my papers and setting up a new filing cabinet. (My husb was out of town visiting his dad). I mostly made up for that with all the movies I saw with my friend while he was away. Coco recently posted..Four Films Friday (The Historical Romance Edition)
I saw the mileage thing when I was heading up there for my interview, I totally thought it was a sign. Thanks for the support, I think this will all work out okay.
It does sound like you had a good amount of movie watching – we actually got out to the movies over break, too. This is 40 and Skyfall. We were trying to get to see Argo today, but couldn’t work out the kid arrangements. Bummer.
Those toddlers are serious business and don’t take no momma slacking off!! Good luck and congratulations on the new job – it’s a hugely important (yet usually thankless) one.
Congrats Carrie! Sounds like you had a great few days of fun:) WE had some friends over and just hung out with ice cream sundaes and fireworks. It was great! Hikermom recently posted..Free Rant Friday
Making the time while on vacation to workout isn’t easy. It took a lot of planning to make it happen, but I knew I’d feel so much better once it got done.
The winery tours and tastings sound like they were a lot of fun. You look absolutely beautiful in the dress you wore for NYE! Suzanne recently posted..We Are ALIVE!

Thank you so much. It’s always fun to get dressed up. I’m such a cheapskate at casinos (well in most things). Organization – I’ll remember that.
