Happy Mothers’ Day

My son couldn’t wait to give me the gift he made for me at school this week. I had to open it on Saturday night.
Here’s the poem:
You are as bright as the sun
You make me smile as big as the Earth
You cook like a professional chef
You gave me birth.
You exercise as much as an Olympic runner
You are as nice as a dog
You take care of me like I’m a baby
You don’t eat like a hog.
You are as loving as a dog
You play like a puppy
You are like a butterfly
You don’t eat like a dog.
There is so stinking much that I love about this poem. I just don’t know where to start – - obviously, they’re working on similies in 4th grade right now. He told me after I read it that the ‘bright as the sun’ was referring to that I’m smart. Love that he thinks I cook like a professional chef – his perception of reality is a little off. At least he didn’t say that I’m as fast as an Olympic runner, only that I run as much. And, I guess he has high regard for dogs and puppies – I should be honored to be compared to them.
Oh how I”m going to miss it when he no longer makes gifts at school.
Dancing Girl (who has long outgrown the school-made gifts) did tag me in a picture this morning on Instagram. I know her crowd of friends are not the type yet that understand that it’s okay to write messages to your parents on social media. But, I’ll take this.
Actually, I read it just as I was finishing up my Mothers’ Day morning run. I had to cut the miles a little short because my right foot was a little angry. So, I was walking the last mile home and messing with my phone and saw the IG tag. Made me cry. Love her. Made my day.
I’m so lucky to have such amazing kids – I’m so lucky to have such an amazing mom. I’m so lucky to have so many amazing mom-ish people in my life as well. Happy Mothers’ Day to all of you.
Do your kids still make gifts in school?
