Fitting in some movement – on vacation and at work

Last weekend, I traveled with my family to Arizona. We are big baseball fans – or my husband is a huge Dodger fan and we all like to enjoy the sport with him.
Ever since the Dodgers moved their spring training to Arizona, he’s been wanting to go. So, we packed up and left super early one morning to make it to Phoenix for a 1:00 baseball game.
The weekend was really fun. Although the weather was crazy hot, it was fun. The kids got some autographs, we got a couple of baseballs from the players between innings and Dancing Girl even made friends with Andre Ethier.
But, we also did a lot of sitting, driving and eating (I’ll share some of the yummy eats in their own post).
So, it was important to me to make sure I was fitting in some movement as much as I could. Yay for a hotel gym!
My kids asked if they could come with me to the hotel gym each morning. The best thing about a hotel gym – no one to say that my kids were too young to use the equipment. Of course I couldn’t say no. I know my kids are active and they are really well behaved and wouldn’t do anything dumb on the equipment.
So, the first morning, it was just me and Dancing Girl. We each did our own thing (I hit up the elliptical, a little treadmill and some weights – she used the TM and did some stretching and her ballet warm up stuff). And then we finished with a plank contest. It wasn’t even close – she kicked my butt. We bet a foot massage – I made good later that morning.
I’m sweating buckets and she looks like she could go all day.
Day 2, Dude came with us. He rode the stationary bike and went about 3 miles. I ran my 5K on the treadmill for my 13 in 2013 St. Patrick’s Day Virtual Race and Dancing Girl did her own thing, too. We had a 3 person plank contest and I lost again.
The best part – when we finished, both kids said “That was fun”.
It’s hard to take a picture while running on a treadmill.
Day 3 and there were other people in the fitness room, so Dude was a little worried that he wasn’t really supposed to be there, so he opted to not join us. Dancing Girl and I had another great workout. I declined a plank contest this time. Although we did both do some core work. That dancing thing is no joke – she’s got some muscle.
I felt so much better getting active each morning. Especially on that 3rd day when we also had a late afternoon 6 hour drive home. We didn’t go crazy, I think each day we were in the gym for about 45 minutes. It was plenty and it felt great.
This is the first time I’ve used the hotel gym while on a family vacation. Usually our vacations are pretty active, so I’m not feeling the same need to fit in the extra activity. This trip was different, too much sitting and too little movement for me.
As far as work goes – I sit a lot during the day now. And, I have a super small office – I can’t use those tricks of getting up to talk to someone to get away from my desk. Seriously, my whole office is about 500 square feet. I don’t have to get up from my chair to talk to my coworker (yes, there’s only one) or my boss. I do get up and down a lot, but there’s just not much more than that.
So, I came up with an idea. I do get up to go to the bathroom a lot. The bathroom is literally 20 steps from my desk, too. So, I decided that every time I go to the bathroom, I’m going to do squats while I dry my hands. Luckily, again, it’s a tiny place, so it’s not like anyone sees me in the bathroom. So, I’m doing 10 squats each time. This week, I kept a little tally mark at my desk of how many times I got in the set of squats. On Tuesday, I did 80 squats, Wednesday it was 50 and Thursday it was 60 (I guess I drank a lot of water on Tuesday). Not too shabby.
I do think I need to mix things up a little bit, doing only squats is going to lose its effectiveness after a while. What else can I do while drying my hands (and it’s a wall air blower thingy – so I need to stay in one place)?
