Exercise for your mind and body
I’ve been a little quiet this week. Between the death of my computer earlier in the week and the fact that I’m stepping up my job search mode and that’s adding some stress to my day, this hasn’t been a great week.
Yesterday, my kids started school. You would have thought it would have been a great day. But, I made the mistake of not scheduling in some activity for myself for the day. I spent the day sitting in front of the computer – updating my resume, reading job search related articles, reaching out for some networking, all of that. The anxiety over putting myself out there is starting to creep in.
By the end of the day I had a huge headache. I haven’t been turning to food to cope, but I’ve been ignoring my exercise. Let’s look at the week:
Monday: Conquer the Bridge Race
Tuesday: nothing (computer death day)
Wednesday: 3 mile run
Thursday: nothing (lots of butt sitting)
Friday: today – time to change things
I haven’t even been doing strength training at home on my non-running days as I usually do.
So, I woke up today with a new plan. I needed to exercise. I’m going to do my long run for the week tomorrow, so I thought a walk with a friend would be perfect. While getting the kids ready for school, I texted at least 4 different friends and NO ONE was available for a walk. I even cornered another friend at school drop off who had the day off from work – no go on that, too.
So, I grabbed my two friends that are always up for a walk.
We drove to the beach and went for the best 30 minute walk ever. OK, so I totally pooped my two lazy dogs out, it’s been far too long since I took them with me.
The water this morning was like a lake. Beautiful.
The firefighters were out for their workouts.
There was a woman who looked like she was meditating by the water.
Those two white dots in the water were people getting in an open water swim. And the guy on the sand was doing jumping jacks.
Then there were stand up paddle boarders and more people running on the sand.
Don’t let their huge tongues fool you – they were equally happy.
Now I’m ready to tackle the day. Although I still have the headache, the rest of me feels so much more empowered to cope.
Do you find yourself starting to feel crummy when you ignore your exercise routine?
It’s Fitness Friday too – go visit Jill’s blog for the blog hop. And for some tips for making Salad in a Jar!
Great job getting yourself going! Lately, I have ignored anything other than my training runs.Luckily, our family activities have been very active. Mid-week, however, I am also on my butt.
Your pictures made me a bit homesick. What a gorgeous day at the ocean!!!
It was a beautiful day at the ocean. Sorry to make you homesick.
I definitely exercise for the mental health benefits as well! It makes such a difference in my outlook for the day. So sorry you were feeling overwhelmed… sounds like my week last week (in which I did turn to food to cope!) Way to get out there, even after everyone else was busy!

I didn’t say I completely avoided food, but luckily I don’t have too much bad stuff in the house to get me into too much trouble.
I feel awful when I don’t exercise and get so moody! My husband will make me get out and do something, he knows me too well.

That’s so awesome that he’ll push you out the door to get moving. It really does work.
I definitely feel lousy when I don’t keep to my regular routine! My husband and I only have one off day because of it!
Your dogs are adorable

Thanks. They are great company and always up for a walk – even if they are now passed out on the couches and hardly moving.
Exercise grounds me – I hate to miss it!! I love that you went & heck, the beach & FIREFIGHTERS!!! If I was close to the beach & not a southern CA drive which is never fun even though I am not too far away – I would be there all the time!
So glad you went. Me, I prefer alone exercising & it helps me work off stress & sometimes gather my thoughts as well!

I do like the alone time, but I’m going for a long run alone tomorrow and was actually kind of craving company.
Yes, I’m blessed to be close to the beach – it’s only 3 miles. I wouldn’t drive through So Cal traffic just for a walk on the beach – - – well, maybe if I was really desperate.
I feel crummy when I even think I’m not going to be able to workout, or if I have to scale back. This week I let my husband do a few of the am dog walks and I really miss that. I did my full workouts but since I’ve decided to make Friday a “light day” (30 min yoga instead of 45 min wts) before my long run I feel like a slacker on the verge of a downward slide.

What are you running tomorrow? I’m going for 10 alone and am so totally ready to zone out. I’ll cheer you on from here
It sounds like today was a great day for you! The beach is gorgeous and it looks like your furry friends enjoyed the day as well. Hope you have a great weekend

Thanks Lisa.
Glad you were able to get your walk in! I think dogs are the best walking/running buddies EVER. I love running w/ my running buddy (the human kind), but sometimes it is nice just to chill w/ the dog!

They are the best company.
Undoubtedly yes! Not working out throws me off mentally and physically. There have even been times when my husband will tell me I need to go for a run haha!

You’re not the first to mention your husband pushing you out the door.
Great job getting in a walk. Sometimes a walk with the dogs is the best medicine:) I hope the job search goes well. I know you will find something perfect for you:)

Thanks Rachelle. I have an interview tomorrow with a recruiting firm – so nervous.
I love seeing all the beautiful views on your run! I post so many waterfront photos from here on the Gulf of Mexico, but they are so different from your California views!

Ug. I have had those days/weeks! I am glad you got out and enjoyed yourself and got some fresh air and exercise. Sometimes my compromise for not running is doing some other active chore, like washing the car or scrubbing the floor/shower/toilet. That’s cross training! I hate it when I am supposed to run but don’t. I feel worse mentally and physically but I also get down on myself, like I have failed at doing what I set out to do/said I would do!
