DOMS – Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness

I only recently heard the term DOMS – Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. It’s not like I hadn’t experienced it, it was only just something that I was able to put a name to.
I was reminded of it again this week. Here I am thinking I’m not doing a half bad job of strength training and then I go to my favorite Yoga class on Sunday. I did push each stretch and try really hard during the class. My body very nicely reminded me of my own weaknesses in the form of exhausted muscles at the end of class.
On top of that, I spent seemingly hours helping Dancing Girl work on her back walkover this weekend and I’m going to blame some of my muscle soreness on that.
By the end of the evening on Sunday, I could hardly laugh without my stomach muscles aching. Monday morning, my stomach muscles, especially the obliques, my hamstrings and my triceps were screaming with every movement.
I decided the best course of action was some serious foam rolling to the hamstrings and a day of rest. I did go for a long and slow bike ride with Dude, but a ride that averages a slower pace than my run speed is hardly a sweat fest.
The bad news, I’m reminded every single time that I move that my stomach muscles are weak. I am quite a bit better today – going for a run in a little bit.
Yes, I”m going back to Yoga next Sunday. The only way to make the muscles stronger is to make them work, right? What’s your advice for dealing with DOMS?
